It should be noted that some of the players in
the ranking are not from Kansas City, but come here for the competition and to
see how they stack up against others.
**
Wondering how someone with a lower rank score is ranked higher than
others whose rank score is higher? Well this can
occur because the actual rank is determined by taking into account BOTH the Rank
Score and the Established index.
If you need to see exactly how it all works download the
spreadsheet that contains all of the rankings.
Match
Rules:
Each match is a best 2 out of 3 situation.
No game-breaking glitches are allowed. No pressing the other player's
start button. Dead body infinites allowed only to corner. Winner
keeps same team, assist, and order between the 3 rounds of the match.
Quick Overview of the Ranking System:
Players have points. If matches are won points are gained, if matches are lost points are lost. The amount of points gained and lost depends on the rank of the opponent and the "established index" of that ranking. Players can not stack the points in their favor by simply having matches all of the time. Matches against people of lower skill will not
yield many points over time. If a player's rank is extremely far above their opponent's and that person wins no points will exchange hands. If the lower ranked player beats that highly ranked player many points will exchange hands.
Details of the System:
The system is implemented by weighting the awards for victory and the penalties for defeat according to a function which takes into account both the difference in the competing players' ranks and an index of how well established those ranks are - that is, how many and how significant were the games on which the ranks were based. Thus each player carries two numbers into each game: Rank and Index.
Rank is the figure that is compared with others as an assessment of skill. Every player begins with a rank of 500. They gain rank for wins and lose rank for losses, except in the case where the opponent's rank is so markedly different from the player's own that the system regards the conclusion as foregone. (Of course, should an upset occur, the rewards and penalties will be great). Therefore to gain in rank one must win against players of a similar rank to ones own or better; conversely to lose rank one must lose to players of similar rank or worse.
Index can be seen as a measure of the volatility of the Rank figure. It ranges from 500, meaning untried, down to 100, meaning fully established. With every game played, some amount is subtracted from the index (in fact it is the same amount that is either added or subtracted from the Rank), until the player is considered established with an Index of 100. The only way to increase ones Index is to fail to play. An absence of three months from ranking-games will increase the Index of even an established player to at least 200; four months, 300; five months, 400; and a player who is absent for six months or more will carry a 500 Index that effectively represents its owner as untried. These changes to the Index do not affect the Rank, however, while the player remains absent - it affects only the weight which is given to that Rank in calculating the awards in games played on return. Essentially this is the factor that determines who valid the rank number is. An index of 500 means the rank is essentially not valid or accurate of said person's skill. An index of 100 means the rank is essentially a perfect representation of the person's skill.
Stake: A Stake is the "importance" level of the match taking place. The stake is based on the rank and index of both players. The importance changes depending on who wins the match. If a lower ranked player defeats a higher ranked player then the stake is the highest, 10 (meaning that was a very significant match). If a higher ranked player defeats a lower ranked player
then the stake is determined based on the difference between their ranks (meaning that if a higher player wins then the match is less important because that is what "should" have happened.)
Increm factor: This is the calculated amount that each player's rank will change. The index of both players will also be decreased by this amount. This is
calculated based on the stake of the match.
Implementation and calculations:
Every player starts with a rank of 500 and an established index of 500.
The lowest rank that can be held is 100.
The lowest index that can be held is 100.
The highest index that can be held is 500.

Increm Factor:
player 1: stake * (1 + 19 * (rank1 / 100) - (rank2 / 100) - 3 * (rank1 / 100) * (rank2 / 100)) / 16
player 2: stake * (1 + 19 * (rank2 / 100) - (rank1 / 100) - 3 * (rank2 / 100) * (rank1 / 100)) / 16
Then round down to nearest integer.
Example:
Bugs Bunny is ranked 648 with an index of 131
Daffy Duck is ranked 520 with an index of 453
In this case Bugs Bunny is expected to win this match, because he is higher ranked and has played
enough games to establish this as an accurate number. However Daffy Duck has not played as many games so his lower rank isn't
necessarily very accurate.
If Daffy Duck wins this match making it an upset. Daffy will gain 42 points. Bugs Bunny will lose 2 points. Bugs lost only 2 because of his established index rating. However, the next time these two meet for a match, Daffy's rank will be considerably higher, thus making the loss worse for Bugs.
If Bugs Bunny wins this match then the match went exactly as it should have. Bugs will receive no points for this match due to his highly established rank of being better than Daffy. Daffy will lose 8 points, because of his non established rating.
